Wink's Words
The Great Pumpkin Palooza:
October 28 from 6:00 - 7:30
Mark your calendar for a great parental involvement event, The Great PumpkinPalooza. Our music, art, science and social studies teachers will be having a showcase of the things that they have been doing for the 1st 9 weeks.
Homeroom teachers will engage their students in creating a booth with a twist. Each class will be given a pumpkin and we will have a decorating contest where the grade level with the most votes will get a grade level surprise and the the top 3 homeroom classes will also get a prize. The booths will be centered around a piece of literature. More information will be coming to you in the next week.
Time is of the Essence
Now that the 1st six weeks is over, it is time to focus on maximizing our minutes of instruction. Here are some questions that I would like you to consider?
- How much time do you use transitioning from activity to activity, putting things up, getting ready?
- How much time do our struggling kids waste getting started, in independent work, or completing a task?
If you add up the minutes, how much time would that be? The key to managing time is to 1st account for it. Using a timer to know how long it takes is a great way to add time to your instruction. Setting goals for faster transitions banks even more time to your instruction in 2 ways. 1st, faster transitions mean more time for instruction, and 2nd, monitoring your time conditions the kids to use their time wisely.

The Heart of our Work
1-2-3 Intervention Process
This past week, our leadership team engaged in a good discussion on the 1-2-3 intervention process. The 1-2-3 was designed not as something new, but to focus something you already do. Each day, we have a student that we are struggling to reach either academically or behaviorally. We seek help from our peers and then we go back to our class. The problem is that we don't keep a record of what we have done, what help we have sought and evaluated what strategies work.
The 1-2-3 is designed to get you to reflect on what you are doing with your student and then evaluate if your interventions are effective and frequent. In part 1 of the process, identify the student and the biggest issue that is affecting learning. Bring samples of student work or behavior logs to show what difficulties the student is having. In step 2, it is important to list the 2 most prevalent interventions that have been tried, how frequent they were used and what the results of the interventions were. Finally, part 3 is the collaborative process where the teammates help design new ideas or revisions of current interventions to try next. Your GLF's will come to you to further explain how they see the process working in your team. Ultimately it is a process that you have the ability to personalize to make it work for you and your team.
Celebrate our Growth
Amber Legan and Myra Ritter are working exceptionally hard each day to meet the needs of their challenging students. I appreciate their willingness to try new things and their strong desire for all kids to learn.
Nicole Scott & Carrie Henry are doing an excellent job of facilitating their team. They are developing teams where everyone contributes and feels valued.
Every morning outside cafeteria 2 you will find Fran Hollins, "Miss Fran", one of our custodians working with kids on math and reading skills. This is going above and beyond her duties. We appreciate you!
I would like to give Coach Henry a huge "Thank You" for building a relationship with a kiddo last year and coming to me this year and asking for that kiddo to be with him during PE. The little things seem to make the biggest differences in the lives of our students. Thanks Coach!!
Thank you to Cathy Board, Fran Hollins, Theresa Maness, and Cheryl Hart. You ladies are doing a great job with the second grade during lunch. You are proactive and have a great system in place.
