Spelling Bee
I would like to ask that you encourage your faculty to attend the bee on Thursday the 27th at the Civic Center.  Admission is FREE to the public.  If you would like to eat the catered meal it is $12.  I have tickets for anyone that is interested.  We have teams of our kiddos spelling from Elementary and Intermediate against teams from other districts in the county.  It would be great to see the support from our staff and faculty.  The doors open at 5:30 and they will stop serving the meal at 6:30.

The Heart of our Work

Maslow Matters

I wanted to share this story with you from our LSSP, Ms. Dickson.

After our meeting about Maslow on Monday, we had 3 different students come to the office on Tuesday.  The first child had a major discipline issue and the precipitating factor for the behavior dealt with issues that arose from a sudden change at home.  Because the student was struggling with Safety and Security needs, the student's behavior escalated.  The 2nd child lost a reward because of poor behavior.  Instead of acting out, the child asked to go to the office to "chill out".  Because of a loss in self confidence, the student was seeking Love and Belongingness by visiting with the counselor.  The student went back to class and had a good day.  The last student asked if he could come to the office to read a book to his counselor.  His purpose was not to show his reading but to fulfill his need for Self-Worth and Self-Esteem.

The way that we acknowledge kids daily, affirm constantly and relate to regularly will be the difference in a child's ability to accelerate his own growth or spin their wheels in desparation.  In the end, Maslow matters.

This week, I challenge you to tell your colleagues your story of a student who had deficiency needs and you responded in a way that guided the student to satisfy those needs.  Each story is one more strategy that we can all use to meet the needs of all kids and we are always looking for one more strategy.

Celebrate our Growth

Great job to Sandra Gonzalez and Gina Treadway for organizing our TELPAS testing this week. While this task is very time consuming and meticulous, these ladies did a fantastic job.

Thank our Custodians.
The building received a huge spring cleaning over spring break.  Please join me in thanking every custodian for all of their hard work.  Dawn White, Fran Hollis, Vonda Nelson, Raymond Granville, Sandy Alexander, Edrick Hornsby, Gary Courson, and J. T. Abron.

Great job to Olivia Secord, Stacie Tomlin and Stacy Winkler for their work taking up the fundraiser money.  We raised over $4500 which will go to student incentives.

Thank you so much to our cafeteria staff and our specials teachers for making our "Bring your Parent to School Day" a success.  We appreciate everything that you did to make these 2 days a success.

Mrs. Traylor Says….

Laura Morris has come up with a clever way to motivate kids during independent reading while still holding them accountable. Students in the Green and Blue zone choose chapter books to read during independent reading, and then take a quiz. (short answer questions, not multiple choice) Yellow zone students can join in later in the year. Students then get to write their name on the poster.  For each book read, students get in a drawing for a book from the book fair this spring. Mrs. Morris said she has had more kids excited about reading chapter books then ever before.

The impact we have on students can last a lifetime.

Mrs. Barnes says.......

Mrs. Bean's last day (until May)  with us will be one day next week.  Send her your prayers and well wishes as she prepares to welcome baby Emerson Tate into this world.  She has prepared assessments and sent off copies far exceeding what has been expected of her.  She definitely will not be leaving her team short one member.  Thank you and congratulations!!

First grade had a great trip to McDonald's for ice cream this week.  The students had a behavior challenge and those that met the challenge were rewarded with ice cream.  Thank you First Grade teachers.  The trip was a huge success.  Hopefully this has a positive impact on our students.

All the ESL certified teachers need a big shout out. You did an amazing job this week for TELPAS collaborations. A lot of extra work is required of you so I appreciate your willingness to do what is necessary to ensure all kids are successful.
